Powerpoint 2003/2007/2010 Unable to get video on second Monitor.

PowerPoint 2003/2007/2010 Unable to get video on second Monitor.

The official workaround for the bug is to turn off hardware acceleration. However, that isn’t going to work here because the your video drivers don’t allow it. So we have to take a back-end approach to turning off acceleration.

First let’s try it with compatibility settings. Try these steps:
  • 1       Browse to PowerPoint.exe on the hard drive. Right-click it and choose Properties.
  • 2       Go to the Compatibility tab.
  • 3       Check the boxes to disable visual themes, desktop composition, and display scaling.
  • 4       Click Apply and OK.

These options contain most of the acceleration features. Now try running PPT with the videos. If it works, re-enable the options one at a time and test PPT again. Leave checked whichever disable option allows the video to display.

One of these should work, but if not let’s try disabling Aero next.
  • 1      Go to Personalization in Control Panel.
  • 2      Choose Windows Color and Appearance. You may have to then click a link for more advanced options.
  • 3      Change the color scheme from Windows Vista Aero to Windows Standard.
  • 4      Reboot.

Does it work now? If it does, try moving back up to Windows Vista Basic and see what happens. You will have to let the customer know he needs to disable Aero any time he wants to run this presentation.

If the video still does not play after trying all of these options, then have the customer download and install the Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 5.0 from this URL:

It is the one labeled Application Compatibility Toolkit.msi. Once installed do this:
  • 1       Open "Compatibility Administrator"
  • 2       Right click on the new database and choose "Create New" and "Application Fix"
  • 3       Name it “PowerPoint Video”, and then browse to the program file: "powerpnt.exe" on your HD.
  • 4       Click Next and choose "none" for the operating system compatibility mode. Click Next.
  • 5       Scroll down to "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" and check it. Click Finish.
  • 6       Close "Compatibility Administrator"

Now try running it. This should have the same effect as turning off acceleration for most features. See if it works here and let me know what you find.
